The FA have reportedly contacted Wayne Rooney after he admitted he wore longer studs in a match against Chelsea “because he wanted to hurt someone”.
Rooney made the change before a match for Manchester United against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on April 29, 2006.
Jose Mourinho’s side held a nine-point lead over United with three games to go and only needed a draw to lift the Premier League trophy.
Rooney went into the match 16 years ago with the intention of trying to hurt his opponents – something he achieved in a brutal clash with John Terry that day.
His comments could come back to bite him, however, with The Athletic reporting that the FA have now asked the Derby County manager for his observations around his claims.
But Terry finished the match in pain following a crunching tackle with Rooney in the early stages, which left him bleeding from the top of his foot.
"I changed my studs before the game," Rooney told the Mail on Sunday, ahead of the release of an Amazon Prime documentary called ‘Rooney’ on Friday.
"I put longer studs in because I wanted to hurt someone.
"If Chelsea won a point, they won the league. At that time, I couldn't take it.
"The studs were legal. They were a legal size. But they were bigger than what I would normally wear."
Former Chelsea captain Terry seems to see the funny side of the incident, tweeting: "@WayneRooney is this when you left your stud in my foot?" along with a pair of laughing emojis on Monday.
The revelation is just one of the headlines that has come out of the upcoming documentary.
Rooney has admitted to going on two-day booze benders and “disrespecting” Sir Alex Ferguson by demanding to leave United amid a contract dispute in 2010.
